Background of the study
Vowel sounds are produced by specific articulatory movements, including tongue position, lip rounding, and jaw movement. In the Efik language, spoken predominantly in Calabar, vowels are crucial for distinguishing meaning. This study examines the articulatory features of Efik vowel sounds, focusing on how these physical articulatory gestures contribute to the acoustic quality of the language (Okon, 2023). Recent advances in imaging and acoustic analysis have enabled a more precise examination of these features, yet few studies have targeted Efik specifically (Chukwu, 2024). The research aims to document the detailed articulatory configurations associated with each vowel, comparing differences across speakers and contextual variations. This documentation is vital for developing effective language teaching materials and speech synthesis models that reflect authentic Efik pronunciation. By highlighting the nuanced articulatory dynamics, the study contributes to both theoretical phonetics and practical applications in language preservation and education (Adeniyi, 2025).

Statement of the problem
Despite the centrality of vowel sounds in Efik, there is limited empirical data on their articulatory features. This lack of detailed analysis hampers effective language teaching and speech technology development. Inconsistent documentation of tongue position, lip rounding, and jaw movement in Efik vowel production prevents a full understanding of its phonetic system (Ibrahim, 2023). Consequently, pronunciation training and speech synthesis systems may not accurately represent the unique features of Efik vowels. Addressing this gap is essential for improving language instruction and preserving the phonetic identity of the Efik language as spoken in Calabar.

Objectives of the study:

  1. To analyze the articulatory features of Efik vowel sounds.
  2. To document speaker variations in vowel production.
  3. To inform language teaching and speech synthesis models for Efik.

Research questions:

  1. What are the key articulatory characteristics of Efik vowels?
  2. How do these features vary among speakers in Calabar?
  3. What are the implications for language instruction?

Research hypotheses:

  1. Efik vowels exhibit distinct articulatory features.
  2. Speaker demographics influence vowel articulation.
  3. Detailed articulatory analysis improves pronunciation training.

Significance of the study (100 words):
This study is significant as it provides a comprehensive examination of the articulatory features of Efik vowel sounds, enhancing our understanding of vowel production in Efik. The findings will support the development of accurate language teaching materials and speech technologies, aiding in the preservation of Efik phonetic identity (Okon, 2023).

Scope and limitations of the study:
This study is limited to examining the articulatory features of Efik vowel sounds in Calabar, focusing on acoustic and articulatory measurements.

Definitions of terms:

  1. Articulatory Features: The physical movements of speech organs during sound production.
  2. Vowel Sounds: Speech sounds produced with an open vocal tract.
  3. Efik: An indigenous language spoken in Calabar.
